MEN AND EMOTIONS: A PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL APPROACH
Ronald F. Levant, Ed.D., A.B.P.P.

About the Video Program
Traditionally, both fathers and mothers have taught their sons that “boys don't cry” and that “real” men are “strong and silent.” The inevitable result is that so many men today suffer from a disorder which Ronald F. Levant, one of the founders of the new psychology of men, calls Normative Male Alexithymia-an inability to describe or even be aware of one's emotions.

Now, in this dramatic recreation of key moments in a 11-session course of therapy with Raymond - a man who at midlife cannot feel excitement at the prospect of his impending fatherhood - Dr. Levant demonstrates, for the first time, a psychoeducational treatment program that helps men to recognize and express their emotions. The therapist/client interactions, enhanced by Levant's commentary, provide step-by-step guidelines for helping men to:
  • develop their vocabularies to include words that encompass the spectrum of human emotions
  • distinguish between “action empathy” and “emotional empathy;”
  • use an Emotional Response Log to identify and track their emotions;
  • apply new awareness and emotional expressivity to explore deeper issues.
The accompanying viewer's manual presents an overview of the theory and research that informs the new psychology of men, spells out clinical applications, and provides background information on the case presented on the video as well as commentary on each session. An optional CE test is also available.

Advance Praise for the Video
“Dr. Levant's psychoeducational approach to psychotherapy with men is impressive and effective and this tape captures both his clinical skill and clarity. It is a wonderful teaching video, providing a powerful demonstration of the ways in which therapists can assist men to become more emotionally aware and responsive... The combination of didactic material and homework assignments and the beautiful modeling of a non-shaming, empathic approach make this a truly effective and engaging learning adventure. This tape is a must for anyone working with men in psychotherapy.” Judith V. Jordan, Ph.D., assistant professor, Harvard Medical School
