In Masculinity Reconstructed, Dr. Ronald F. Levant, Dean and Professor of Psychology at the Center for Psychological Studies of Nova Southeastern University, urges men to look forward, not back, to forge a new masculine code that works in the modern world. Basing his work on a study of American men's views of masculinity and drawing on many years of experience in dealing with men's issues-as both a researcher and a therapist-Dr. Levant examines which aspects of their gender role socialization really work and which frustrate and fail them. He shows men how to change facets of traditional behavior patterns that limit their effectiveness as lovers, husbands, fathers, and friends, while enhancing those parts of the male code which are meaningful and empowering. Describing cases from his own therapy practice, Dr. Levant offers evidence that once men realize the need to develop their “Emotional Intelligence,” they do not hesitate to acquire the skills that will enable them to relate better to their families, friends, and coworkers.
Masculinity Reconstructed offers a way to resolve the current male crisis, one that forges a middle path between the outmoded traditional model and the ill?fitting “sensitive male.” The modern pattern lies within himself and his experience, and can be readily discovered.
